In Europe, at the turn of the millennium, the monopolies of traditional, established telecommunications operators began to fall. The period is marked by the rapid development of digital signal processing and thus technologies that enabled the efficient transmission of telephone traffic over Internet networks. Competition has appeared on the market to established traditional providers of telecommunications services. It was most pronounced in the transit market segment of international telephone calls, where margins and price differences were traditionally the highest. Mega M set up hubs in London, United Kingdom and Ljubljana, Slovenia and started transiting international telephone traffic within Europe and also intercontinental connectivity.
